ALRIGHT GUYS! This is a BIG post in an attempt to make up for all the posts I've been missing lately. Sorry if anyone suffers a crazy load time...

1.) Mice Recap
Last weekend I was in Boston with Kelly Phillips and Che Salazar of C3 Productions and we got our tabling on at the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE)! We had a blast, sold some comics, met some new friends and get some sweet swag! Here is what I picked up: (picture to follow once I find my GODDAMN CAMERA CHORD)

Pandora's Box by Ken Wong: This comic is fascinating and tons of fun to play with! Its a comic on a folded box structure based on the story of Pandora's Box. As you read the comic, you have to open and interact with the box to get the whole story. Needless to say my book making nerd was wigging out all over this comic. My favorite part of this book is the leap of faith you have to make in order to read the whole comic... just like Pandora you have to open the box, not knowing what's going to happen. Once you open the box will you ever be able to fold it back up again? Luckily Ken Wong (a super nice guy!) rewards our curiosity by giving us instructions on how to refold the box inside the box! Although I'm still not sure how I'm going to store this comic on my book shelf... ;)

Teen Bean: How My Self-Esteem Was Drama Clubbed by Cara Bean : I first ran into Cara Bean's work in This Isn't Working: Comics About Ex-Boyfriends from Paper Rocket Comics and loved her adorable style and intense attention to detail. Amazingly she was at MICE and I got to trade with her for another one of her comics! She was so nice and so cute... I have no idea why she draws herself as a stumpy bean cause she is neither stumpy, nor a bean. This particular comic is about her telling a student about her most embarrassing high school moment when she participated in the school play about teenage pregnancy. Yes, its as silly as it sounds and well worth the read!

A Very Helpful Guide to Gaga by Laurel Leake: I am a HUGE Lady Gaga fan and have fantasies about some day writing a comic about how I found her and how she has assimilated herself into my life... so I bought Laurel's comic to act as inspiration for my own zine and I ended up with the silliest, most excellent homage to Gaga I've ever seen. She recaps Gaga's videos from Just Dance to Alejandro with her own interpretations as to the meanings of Gaga's visual content. Its funny, gorgeous and totally on point.

Questions by Loony-Brain: I acquired this comic when the owner approached me and wanted to trade for a copy of A Real Romance. Always ready for a trade, I agreed and ended up with one of the more powerful comics I've read in a few years. Loony-Brain has created an informative comic about her Multiple Personality (according to her comic I shouldn't call it a Disorder, so I'm doing my best not to) where she goes page by page, answering the questions she most commonly runs into. I was BLOWN AWAY by this comic. I really wasn't prepared to think about a different reality than my own and this comic is a very through illustration of a reality I never even knew could exist in our world. I'm doing a terrible job of describing this comic, so just go buy it from her and read it. Then tell me you read it and lets talk about it... cause lord knows I come up with new thoughts about it daily!

2.) Mail Art Recap
At my last few tabling events I have started selling 'FUN MAIL' for $1. People write their address on an envelope and I take them home, make something fun and then send it to them! Theses are a few of the pieces of Mail Art I have sent out. I'll let you guys see what else I make and mail out once I'm sure that the art has arrived at its new home. I dont want to spoil the surprise on the internet before it arrives in the their mailbox! If you guys are interested in some 'FUN MAIL' drop me a line or come visit me at my next tabling event!

Alright guys. No comic this week (sorry) but lots of news to spread!

First, three philly comic chickas and I are compiling some comics about getting your drink on and publishing them in a new all girl philly comic anthology called DIRTY DIAMONDS. This issue features Kelly Phillips, Dre Time, Carey Pietch and myself! We're working really hard on this and we are set to release at the Philly Alternative Comic Con this August in Philly! In celebration of the release of a new Philly comic anthology we are holding a DIRTY DIAMONDS RELEASE PARTY after PACC around the corner at LOCUST MOON. There will be food, drinks, raffles, prizes, ladies and MUCH MORE! So spread the above flyer around and get ready to PAR-TAY!

Okay my lovelies! Yet again, there is no comic... but there is news and a new silkscreen to oggle! So rejoice... for there is an update this week!

Here is my newly finished silkscreen, titled: Neighbors

I completed this silkscreen at my lovely local print shop, BYO Print. If you're a Philly local and need a cheap place to get your print on, I highly reccomend this place. Its overtop of an antique motorcycle shop... how cool is that?!

This silkscreen will soon be available for sale on my Etsy.

This silkscreen, along with my previous Welcome to: FISHTOWN print are hanging in a real estate office on Frankford Ave, along with a bunch of great art by all my Philly Comics Jam buddies. The opening is this Friday. Come by, see the art and start your spring time first fridays off right!

And my final piece of news... I have offically finished the Young Love series! I know you all are DYING to see the finished piece, but you can't. Not yet atleast... The finished video is going to be shown at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in May, so you just have to hold out till then kiddies! Here is the 2nd video in a 3 part series I am working on. You can find part three >> HERE. Part one is in the process of being scripted, but even when its done, you guys wont get to see it for awhile, but I will tell you why.

The whole video series, Young Love: A Romance in Three Acts, will be on display at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art from May till early July 2011, and the curator there has asked me not to put the whole series on the internet for mass viewing. Originally I considered not even posting Act 2 but before I ever talked to the curator of the DCCA I was planing on showing you guys the finished 2nd part. So I am still going to give you that, but part one will be unavailable until AFTER my show comes down and then I will put all three together and we will go from there.

This just means you all should burn to see the whole film so badly, that you will trek out to Delaware to view it. Trust me... itll totally be worth it.

So sorry I missed the update yesterday... I was all rush rush rush and didnt get a moment to myself...

AND to make matters worse, I dont have a comic this week... BUT I have a good reason! I am in the middle of pre-production for a one minute silent film for the Toronto Urban Film Festival. Here is a picture of an in-progress prop I will be using in the film:

Hey all! Instead of a comic this week you get to see my hand printed woodblock side project! Aren't they cute? I printed these using a bastardization of the Japanese woodblock printing technique after observing it at the Southern Graphics Council convention I attended early this spring.

I also wanted to let you all know that I am currently in the process of compiling one page books for SELLING! Thats right! I have one page books ready to go to into envelopes and out to your mailman, if you so desire. Im working on getting together a place to sell these things in a fashion that would make sense... maybe Etsy? I dont know. But thats coming soon!

Also, have you guys read Three Shadows by Cyril Pedrosa yet? A friend of mine lent it to me and it was crazy good. Beautiful and heartfelt. I teared up a little at the end. Highly recommended.

Thankfully our muggy spell broke, but last sunday it was HORRIBLE. Like walking around in a wet washcloth. ugh.

Okay, so ive thought long and hard about it, and Ive decided to cut updates down to once a week. Im starting to work more, its nicer outside and I feel like I need to start thinking MORE about the comics, instead of just popping them out one after another. So, the one page books will still be happening, I will be editing the books into internet acceptable comics and they will be posted every Wednesday.

So no update till wednesday of next week! Ill see you cats then!

PS: This comic works much better as a book. I suggest you print it out if you can.

Dont worry. I haven't abandoned you. This week has been full of non-sense and im just taking a little time for myself. Im about to start a new job (yay!), just put a residency application in the mail (yay yay!) and its an awesome day outsdie (yay yay yay!) so the comic I have finished for today will have to wait to be scanned. No worries my friends, its coming. I promise.

But all that aside I still havent decided on how I want to handle the update schedule from here on out. Im thinking twice a week, but ive got a fair amount of free time right now, so im sure the summer with change all that and therefore change the update schedule. We shall just have to wait and see, i guess.

In other news, im working on applying for a comics residency for the fall... so send me your good thoughts and maybe ill get it done!

PS: Incase youre wondering Im currently reading Nora Robert's Irish Born trilogy. Sadly, my copy of the first book was fucked and missing 30 or so pages... this makes me hate my life just a little bit more.

Comic Convention To Do List one page book (May 2010)

So you maybe wondering why this comic looks a little odd? Well thats because its a one page book! Hooray! Im trying to point myself in a direction artisticly where I use the structure of the one page book to create my comics. Below the cut you can see what the comic looks like as a book and get a link to the pdf of the book for printing. (As always, if you arent sure how to fold up a one page book, check out my swanky little instructions >> here.)

Now i have come questions for you, my lovely readers. Id like to keep exploring this one page book idea a little more frequently, but the books take a little longer to make. This means that my update schedule might need a little tweaking. My thought on the whole thing is to keep updating two days a week, but only have one comic per week. Tuesday would be the book format comic (with everything all upside down etc.) with link to the pdf and then Thursday would be the photoshop edited comic (like the one you see above) so that you dont HAVE to print and fold up the book just to read the comic properly.

But I really want to know what you guys think! Should I stick with the two day update schedule but cut down to one comic? Should I cut down to once a week but a big post (like todays with all versions of the comic for viewing) or should I try to keep up twice a week with a new comic each update? If i go that route I can pretty much guarantee I will miss updates left and right, but I could try!

Opinions? Anyone? Bueller?

Portland- San Francisco - Michigan Sketchbook (April - May 2010)

Day late. So sorry.

Here are the pages from my sketchbook while I was away. I tried to draw once a day, but that didnt always work out. One page is missing, but since I wanted to work on the drawing more anyway, you guys will see it later.

Waiting in the bar/Quiznos at the Denver International Airport for my connecting flight. Trying to be good and not drink, so I just drew liquor bottles instead.

An ode to the glory that is Portland's coffee (secured from the diner down the street from our hostel) and a drawing of just how goddamn awkward I am at comic conventions (in my head). Stumptown was great but a little overwhelming. I got to see Craig Thompson talk about his upcoming book Hibibi (the drawing that is missing is a portrait of him) and got to shake his hand. Of all the moments, that was prob the least awkward of the convention. Yay me!

To get from Portland to San Francisco Jeff and I drove down the coast... in the pouring rain... for 15 hours... needless to say we were exhausted. Here is one of the rare time I have not drawn Jeff as a bear. I dont remember where the directions were to... I think to drop off the car at the Oakland Airport. So we'll just call these pages the driving pages.

My aunt lives on a boat in Alameda bay (how cool is that?!) and we stayed with her while in CA. All her stemware is plastic or metal because you cant have anything glass on a boat... it just breaks. We took the BART into the city one day and went to the Cartoon Art Museum. They had a really great exhibition on the depiction of the samurai in cartoons, including some really fab pencil drawings from Samurai Champloo. They were so wonderfully raw and rough. so good. MOMA was closed the day we were in the city. suck.

In the upper left hand corner is my sticker badge from my tour of Pixar. My tour could have ended shortly after receiving said sticker and I would have been happy. Toy Story 3 comes out soon and it looks to be pretty sweet, so yay for that. The rest of the page was drawn on the airplane ride home to Philly. I am pretty notorious for getting nauseous on plane rides, but this one was really bad. I was very close to vomiting, but I kept everything on the inside, thankfully. I am also notorious for drawing images of myself puking when I feel sick on airplanes. Gives me something to concentrate on besides my rolling stomach.

The page on the left is thumbnail sketches for some mini-comic thoughts I was having on the plane ride home. The page on the right is a drawing of moosy-battle as seen in the taxidermy displays in Cabela's in Michigan. Once we arrived back in Philly from the west coast we immediately hopped in a car and drove to Michigan for my Mom's graduation from U of M. That drive was actually nothing in comparison to the long wet nonsense that was the western coastal drive.

Now I am home and hopefully getting back to work. Today I am going to clean the studio and unpack and hopefully get outside at some point... See you all on Tuesday!

Encyclopedia P preveiw

Incase you guys didnt know, I did my thesis in performance video (if you back track far enough in the blog youll find my demo reel, which has samplings of my thesis films on there). Even though Ive been making comics, Ive also still been working on making videos. The video you see above is my latest one and is part of a collaborative piece that is going to be in a show in Philadelphia.

Warren Holzman (the blacksmith I write public art proposals for) and I worked together to create a piece for the upcoming Philadelphia Sculptors show called Art Between the Covers. For this show, sculptors were asked to use one or more volumes of an encyclopedia to create an art object. I created a film in which I recreated entires from our Encyclopedia (volume P) using available objects and locations and then edited them together in alphabetical order. Warren then created a "porthole" in our encyclopedia through which my film is viewed on a video MP3 player (which is why the video quality is kinda crappy). Below is a drawing of what the encyclopedia with the porthole looks like.

I feel that our piece illustrates the concept that without a literary context, alphabetical is not a rational organization method.

If you want to see the piece in real life (the porthole in the Encyclopedia is so awesome looking) come to the show! It will be on view from May 30th to June 13th at the University of the Arts in Philly! Ill let you guys know all about the opening once I find out about it!

I hope you guys arent too disappointed this isnt a comic... Tuesday there will be a comic, so dont lose hope! Also, a warning: I am going to be on the west coast from April 22nd till May 4th, so comics might become sporadic while I'm away, but Ill do my best to make sure you guys get pictures, or doodles or something while im gone!

Okay, without all the lies and excuses, I am WAY behind on my studio work. There is a new "comic" in the works, I promise, but I need a bit more time. SGC and some other projects have taken up a bunch of my time, so we are going to try something new here. We have had guests in and out of the house for the last week as well as attending the greatness that was SOUTHERN GRAPHICS COUNCIL here in Philly, so needless to say I have not had much time to pay attention to comics.
